What is Mold?
Molds are a group of microscopic organisms that are a part of the kingdom Fungi. They generally reproduce by means of spores and if disturbed, can spread violently throughout your home or business by means of airflow, and attach to any type of organic matter such as drywall, wood, paper, etc.
What causes mold to grow in my house?
Mold is everywhere; inside, outside, growing on surfaces we touch and even items we eat everyday - (think Blue Cheese). Only when mold growth becomes excessive can it become a structural problem or health concern. Mold typically needs specific conditions to thrive.
- A specific food source such as: paper, wood, drywall, food or trash.
- Moisture. A high humidity environment is enough moisture for mold to bloom.
- Temperature: Mold growth peaks between 68 F – 86 F
- Non-Moving or Stagnant Air: No airflow
- Time: Within 24 hours in the right conditions, mold can begin to grow.
How do I get rid of mold?
Mold is really everywhere, so it is literally impossible to completely irradicate mold. However if you have a mold problem and significant visible mold, Flood Rescue can help. We have specialized anti-microbial treatments we can use to treat mold problems. All our products are safe for your family and building occupants.
How do I know if I have a mold problem?
We can help you diagnose a problem. If you can visibilly see mold present in your home, there is an underlying source. Flood Rescue can help determine the moisture source, and irradicate the mold.
What if I can't see the mold?
If you cannot visibilly see the mold growth, you will typically need an indoor environmentalist to perform an air quality test. These tests can range from $300-$1000 depending on the size of the property. Please contact us and we can diagnose your issue and point you in the right direction.
Will disinfectant or bleach get rid of the mold?
Sure wish it was that easy! You see, some molds produce mycotoxins, which are chemical compounds that may be harmful to some people. Killing the mold with bleach or a disinfectant can cause the cell walls to break down, releasing the mycotoxins into the air, which can cause more health problems than you started with. So, please, if you see mold, don't try and kill it with bleach unless you know what you're doing. You could save yourself a trip to the hospital. Call Flood Rescue instead.
Can I paint over mold with a product like Kilz or a similar primer?
We do not suggest this approach as these products are not an EPA-registered fungicides or anti-microbial agents.
Can mold cause health problems?
Yes. Health concerns include allergies, sinus problems, respiratory problems, infection, disease and even cancer.
Types of mold that cause health problems:
- Allergenic: Most common, causes allergy-like symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, watery/itchy eyes, etc.
- Pathogenic: More rare than allergic molds, can cause skin infections, rash and other diseases including cancer.
- Toxic: Rare mold, yet very dangerous. Causes rashes, infections, respiratory distress, organ failure and death.
